Today’s Working Together is a beautiful story about how converting a garage into a bedroom and a much-needed wetroom has been a complete life changer for Gabriella and her parents, Michael and Julie.
The customer problem
Gabriella has Rett Syndrome and therefore struggles with going up and down stairs, amongst many other simple activities. Making adaptations on the first floor of their family home would be an unsafe, risky option for her, and a challenge for her mother and father. Because of this, Gabriella’s parents, Michael and Julie, made the decision to convert their garage into a bedroom and wetroom, which would be accessed from the downstairs hall.
This would allow for a safe and spacious area for Gabriella to play and sleep, as well as having her own bathroom only a few steps away. Not only would this make an immediate difference for the entire family, but it would mean a safe and future-proof family home for them all, for many years to come. The peace of mind that would come with this transformation would alleviate a significant amount of worry and stress for Michael and Julie.
The solution
The solution involved the removal of the existing garage door and making good the front of the house; fully preparing and insulating the bedroom; creating access through the downstairs hallway and installing the wetroom to the customer’s choice of finish. The work to the exterior of the property involved rendering to match the existing external finish and leaving the outside looking seamless, as if it had always been this way.
The job also involved relocating the boiler to an upstairs cupboard. This move prompted Michael and Julie to take the opportunity to replace their boiler at this time. They also decided that this was the right moment to completely refurbish their downstairs WC. So, all in all, Precise were on site to convert the garage to a bedroom and wetroom; supply and fit a new boiler in its new location and update a WC.

The project
The work was completed in November and so came at the same time as the colder weather, but we were prompt to have all areas sealed as soon as possible and keep the house feeling like a home. The family continued to live there, largely uninterrupted despite the extent of the works. Our team did a great job in allowing family life to continue whilst we were effectively creating a mini building site around them. Most of the work was done within the allotted three weeks, and we were back the following week to complete some finishing touches and any snagging.
The outcome
Gabriella now has her own safe space that she can freely access without the risk of stairs. She also feels a sense of independence, because she has a space that is just for her, and she loves that. This will also help Michael and Julie massively as they won’t have to worry as much about Gabriella.
